Towards Banalization ? Trans-forming the Legacies of the Post-Socialist City

A reflexion has been engaged today about the destiny of socialist legacies in East-European cities. The public opinion, professionals (architects, developers, urban planners, etc..), elected representatives have been debating since the 1990s about the status of those places, being monuments with a strong ideological dimension, or ordinary cinemas. On the example of Sofia and Warsaw, the present processes are analysed through the notion of “banalization”. Indeed, economical reconversion, morphological transformations, but also the social and political look on these places make them more banal, to such a point that some of them did not matter anymore, and were destroyed. But on the contrary, this stage is in certain cases over, and some measures of patrimonial protection have been undertaken, in Sofia and in Warsaw. Une réflexion est aujourd'hui engagée sur le destin des héritages socialistes dans les villes d'Europe de l'est. L'opinion publique, les milieux professionnels (architectes, promoteurs, urbanistes, etc.), les élus ont débattu depuis les années 1990 sur le statut de ces lieux, que ce soient des monuments à forte connotation idéologique ou de simples cinémas de quartiers. Sur les exemples de Sofia et Varsovie, les processus en cours sont interprétés à travers la notion de banalisation. C'est ainsi que la reconversion économique, les transformations morphologiques, le regard social ou politique sur ces lieux les rend plus " banals ", au point certains n'importaient plus pour personne, et ont été détruits. Mais dans certains cas au contraire, ce stade a été dépassé au profit de mesures de protection patrimoniale, à Sofia comme à Varsovie. L'article analyse sur des cas d'étude les processus sociaux et politiques qui ont marqué cette gestion des héritages socialistes.
