Possible unicum, an ivory sculpture of a lion has been discovered during the excavations of the abbey of Saint-Vivien (Charente-Maritime, France). The lion’s symbolism and the raw material used match with the production of an object belonging to a medieval elite. Identified as an ornamental piece, its function remains still hypothetical, as well as its dating. In comparison with other media, the artistic style informs us of a possible production during the second half of the 13th century, or during the beginning of the 14th century. Nevertheless, these can’t provide a conclusive basis for dating this artefact.

Possible unicum, une sculpture sur ivoire d’un lion a été découverte lors des fouilles de l’abbaye de Saint-Vivien (Charente-Maritime). La symbolique attachée au lion, mais aussi le matériau utilisé, sont caractéristiques de la production d’un objet pour une élite médiévale. Identifié comme élément ornemental, sa fonction reste cependant encore hypothétique, tout comme sa datation. Par comparaison avec d’autres médias, le style artistique nous informe d’une possible production de la seconde moitié du XIIIe siècle, ou du début du XIVe siècle. Néanmoins, ces médias ne peuvent constituer une base probante à la datation de cette pièce.
