Michel Pouyllau.— Entre geopolítica e desforestação, a avaliação por imagens satélite da degradação ambiental na Bacia amazónica (caso do Brasil e da Venezuela) As desforestações estão na ordem do dia. Sem negar a importância que elas têm na Bacia amazónica, as técnicas modernas de avaliação por teledetecção permitam relativizar este fenómeno. Tendo em conta os custos e sobretudo a vontade das instituições locais de os concretizar, estes métodos dão uma imagem das realidades locais mesmo se o conjunto da Bacia amazónica não está devidamente cartografado neste domínio preciso. As frentes de colonização agro-pastoril são precedidas nas suas margens de frentes pioneiras que são extremamente importantes no Brasil, em particular nos Estados de Roraïma, Maranhão e Rondonia. Uma segunda série evidencia-se com os Estados de Bolivar e de Amazonas, enquanto que mais ao Norte, na proximidade dos sopés andinos, os solos relativamente ricos das planícies de Llanos são cultivados desde hà vinte anos. Reste colocar uma questão : o porquê de tais diferênças no desenvolvimento das desforestações entre os dois países. Tratar-se-á de estratégias geopolíticas, de pressões de actores sociais ou simplesmente de questões geográficas ?

Michel Pouyllau.— In between Geopolitics and Deforestations : the Evaluation by Satellite Prints of the Environmental Damage in the Amazonian Basin (the Cases of Brazil and Venezuela Deforestations are very topical. Though they do not deny the importance it is taking on in the Amazonian Basin, the modern techniques of evaluation by remote detection enables one to relativize this phenomenon. Because of the importance of the costs involved and above all because of the will of the local institutions to make use of them, this method gives an idea of local realities, even if the whole of the Amazonian Basin, in this precise field, is not systematically drawn on maps yet. The frontiers of agro-pastoral settlement and the pioneering frontiers bordering them are very numerous in Brazil, especially in the States of Roraïma, Maranhão and Rondonia. A second series of frontiers emerges, including the States of Amazonas and Pará. In Venezuela, some patches of deforestation can be found in the South of Orenoque, in the States of Bolivar and Amazonas, while up North, next to the Andean Piedmont, the rather rich soil of the Llanos plain have been cultivated for twenty years. There remains a question without an answer. How can such differences in the developping of deforestation exist ? Are they due to geopolitical strategies or to pressures on the part of the social actors or more simply to geographic facts ?
