Henri IV’s longstanding image of an “officer of Light Cavalry” masks a much richer truth. He fought as a simple gendarme, but it would be caricatural to consider he was solely motivated by a concern for style and gallantry. His military, political, and cultural reasons are clearly much more important. Moreover, he encouraged and adapted the main tactical innovations of his time with sufficient skill to give his unit a clear advantage. In this, he unquestionably participated in the upheavals that revolutionized the structure of cavalry charges.
