Founded in 762, Baghdad was for five centuries the imperial capital of the Abbasid caliphs. The city was conquered by the Mongols 1258. It was ruled by Mongol then Turkmen dynasties before falling into the hands of Ottoman rulers. An active and cosmopolite city, Baghdad was an important intellectual center for many centuries, exerting a wide influence inside the Muslim world.
