Global health: evolution of the definition, use and misuse of the term

During the past two decades, use of the term global health has substantially outstripped that of international health. Related words show similar trends. Although organizations, policies, and resolutions have articulated varied definitions of the term, global health is commonly viewed as emphasizing health of all people around the world, as pertaining to health issues that transcend national borders, and as influenced by a large scope of factors and partners. Based on the definition of the term global health and its differences with international health, principles of global health should include the following: Health for all (driven by equity and aimed at reaching all people in the world); Health by all (health as influenced and improved by a broad scope of actors), and Health in all (health in all policies including those influencing social and environmental determinants). Collective action should aim to bring these guiding principles into balance in service of the shared objective of the attainment by all peoples of the highest attainable state of health.

Au cours des deux dernières décennies, l’utilisation du terme santé globale a largement dépassé celui de la santé internationale. Ce sont des termes proches qui présentent des tendances similaires. Bien que des organisations, des politiques et des résolutions ont élaboré des définitions variées du terme, la santé globale place l’individu au cœur d’un système, mettant l’accent sur la santé pour tous, transcendant les frontières et influencée par un grand nombre de facteurs et de partenaires. Sur la base de la définition du terme santé globale et ses différences avec la santé internationale, les principes fondateurs de la santé globale devraient comprendre : La santé pour tous régie par le principe d’équité et visant à atteindre tous les individus. La santé par tous (la santé, promue par l’étendue très large d’acteurs. La santé dans tout (la santé dans toutes les politiques, y compris celles influençant les déterminants sociaux et environnementaux).
