Au-delà des différences qu’elles entretiennent sur la question de la création littéraire — un engagement total envers la langue comme moyen de connaître « à tâtons » le monde, chez Claude Simon, et un nécessaire enracinement social chez Vargas Llosa — leurs œuvres se rejoignent dans l’attention qu’elles portent à l’écriture de l’histoire. Une même interrogation les anime : comment écrire l’histoire sans tomber dans la tentation de lui donner un sens, une signification, une orientation — politique ou morale ? La Guerre de la fin du monde et Les Géorgiques, romans publiés la même année 1981, offrent une base précise à l’étude.
