In his classic essay “Tales of Sound and Fury”, Thomas Elsaesser discusses the importance of mise-en-scène within melodramatic films’ systems of signification. Sets, props, character positioning and camera angles are often invested with heightened symbolization reinforcing the thematic and emotional undercurrents of the narrative.
