“Hutu” and “Tutsi”: words to say what ? Impossible to be interested in Rwanda without stumbling over the couple of the terms “Hutu” and “Tutsi”. Nevertheless, the one who would neglect their performative capacity and would reduce them to the only ethnic definition, would go without the possibility of including really the history of Rwanda. The « déconstruction » of these words united for the best and for the worst is an obliged passage for whom studies the distant causes of the genocide of “Tutsi” and the massacre of moderate “Hutu” in 1994.

Impossible de s’intéresser au Rwanda sans buter sur le couple des termes « Hutu » et « Tutsi ». Pourtant, celui qui négligerait leur capacité performative et les réduirait à la seule définition ethnique qu’on retient généralement aujourd’hui s’ôterait toute possibilité de comprendre véritablement l’histoire du Rwanda. La déconstruction de ces vocables, unis pour le meilleur et pour le pire, est un passage obligé pour qui étudie les causes lointaines du génocide des « Tutsi » et du massacre des « Hutu » modérés en 1994.
