Résumé En

The contentiousness of markets has recently been assessed by thesocial movements literature. Activists can use a broad range oftactics to compel corporations to change their practices. Thispaper examines the outcomes of this contentiousness. It draws onan empirical study of a disruptive tactic used by anti-corporateactivists: the shame-on-you prize. I propose to adopt an economicsociological perspective to understand the mechanisms by whichsocial movement organizations seek to undermine the values thatunderpin the economic order. Activists provide new categories forvaluating economic activities that challenge the existing ones.Social movement organizations legitimate these valuations as comingfrom civil society and reflecting public expectations about whatshould count in valuations of economic activities. As such, they mayencourage public decision-makers to undertake regulatory action.
