Résumé En

Pompeiopolis. The Metropolis of Paphlagonia. The ancient city of Pompeiopolis is named after its founder, the famous Roman commander Cnaeus Pompeius Magnus. We do not know much about Pompeiopolis in the following periods because of the unexplored history of this region of the Roman Empire. Inscriptions and coins from the 2nd century BC, when Rome already had become an empire for ages ; the city was called “ Metropolis of Paphlagonia” in these times. Our recent archaeological surveys and excavations brought many-faceted insights to ancient Pompeiopolis : the approximate location of the city area, its extension and also the course of the late antique city wall could be clarified. The setting of central urban buildings (baths, theatre) and places (forum / agora) was located. Selective excavations at different locations of the city area brought important insight to the city plan and the stratigraphy. Numerous fragments of marble architecture and marble wall coating demonstrate the urban magnificence of the city.
