Raphaële Andrault, « The internal struggles of the appetite: a secret teleology? », HAL-SHS : histoire, philosophie et sociologie des sciences et des techniques, ID : 10670/1.t0uokb
This chapter examines the analogy between military tactics and the goal-directed functioning of appetites that Leibniz used both in the Discourse on Metaphysics (1686) and in his controversy with Stahl (1710). In so doing, my purpose is threefold: 1/ to question the unity of the concept of appetite in Leibniz; 2/ to show that Leibniz’s notion of the explanatory role of appetites casts doubt on the traditional conflation between appetite and desire for self-pres- ervation; 3/ to demonstrate that self-conscious appetites cannot be regarded as specific final causes of psychophysiological phenomena.
