Starting with the Age of Discovery, a strong interest in geographical and ethnographic questions emerged in Europe. The extreme North of the continent sparked the curiosity of travellers and academics, but some time passed before it was fully known and explored. This article will demonstrate, from a history of ideas perspective, the gradual emergence of a form of borealism, stemming both from empirical observations based on the desire for knowledge, and exotic daydreams often imbued with ideological elements.

I samband med det stora upptäcktsresandets tid under 1800-talets andra hälft väcktes runt om i Europa ett ökat intresse för geografiska och etnografiska frågor. De nordligaste delarna av kontinenten, det höga Norden, pockade på resenärers och forskares uppmärksamhet, och bilden av Norden växte successivt fram. I den här artikeln analyseras, i ett idéhistoriskt perspektiv, det gradvisa framväxandet av en borealism som är resultatet både av empiriska och vetenskapliga observationer och av exotiska drömmar genomsyrade av ideologi.
