In The Dawn of Everything, David Graeber and I describe three basic forms of human freedom: to move away, to disobey, and to transform the social order. Far from being a special achievement of Western civilization, we argue, these freedoms were available to a great many societies across the span of human history, extending back into our species’ prehistoric past. Today, these same freedoms have been largely erased from the lives of most people, such that it is difficult for us now to even imagine what it might mean to live in a world based on such principles. My lecture will consider the challenge of recovering and visualising these forms of freedom in the archaeological record, as an antidote to teleological understandings of social evolution.

Dans « Au Commencement était… », version française de « The Dawn of Everything », David Graeber et moi-même décrivions trois formes fondamentales de liberté humaine : s'éloigner, désobéir et transformer l'ordre social. Loin d'être une réussite particulière de la civilisation occidentale, nous affirmions que ces libertés étaient à la disposition d'un grand nombre de sociétés tout au long de l'histoire de l'humanité, en remontant jusqu'au passé préhistorique de notre espèce. Aujourd'hui, ces mêmes libertés ont largement disparu de la vie de la plupart des humains, à tel point qu'il nous est difficile d'imaginer ce que signifierait vivre dans un monde fondé sur de tels principes. Ma conférence portera sur le défi de retrouver et d’entrevoir ces formes de liberté dans les archives archéologiques, en tant qu'antidote aux conceptions téléologiques de l'évolution sociale.
