لأول مرة، مكن التنقيبُ في مقبرة بيليت، بإقليم تيغراي، من دراسة معمار وطقوس جنائزية إسلامية في مرتفعات إثيوبيا الشمالية يرجع تاريخها إلى ما قبل القرن ٨هـ/ ١٤ م. وقد أصبح من الممكن من الآن فصاعدًا أن تتم، محليًا، مقارنةُ المعطيات المجموعة في بيليت بالنصوص المحفورة على المقابر التي تم تحديدها في محيط منطقة أرا " لم تُنشَر بعد" (القرن ٦هـ/ ١٢ م- ٨هـ/ ١٤ م) والتي كشفت عن مخلفاتٍ مهمة وإن لم تُجرَ فيها حفريات بعدُ. ويدعونا هذا الجردُ الأولي لمقابر تيغراي إلى النظر إلى المواقع في سياق إقليمي أوسع، ليس في إثيوبيا فحسب بل في مجمل القرن الأفريقي وعلى ضفاف البحر الأحمر، وهي مناطقُ كانت على صلة مهمة بها، كما تشهد على ذلك شواهد القبور في بيليت. تقترح هذه المساهمةُ تأملاتٍ أوليةً في مادّية مقابر تيغراي من خلال المظاهر المعمارية (مواقع المدافن وأشكال العلامات السطحية وتنظيمها وإدماج الشواهد المكتوبة بالعلامات) والحجرية (انتقاء الركائز والعمل والنقش وإنجاز الشواهد المكتوبة)

The discovery (or rediscovery) and the archaeological excavation of the medieval Muslim cemetery of Bilet (Tigray, Ethiopia) in 2018, made it possible to study for the first time in the northern highlands of Ethiopia, the funerary architecture and burial rites of a Muslim community prior to the 8th/14th century. The data collected in Bilet, important for the knowledge of Ethiopian Islam before the great conquests of the sixteenth century, can now be compared locally to the unpublished corpus of contemporary cemeteries identified in the vicinity of Arra, which delivered important epigraphic material but were not excavated. This first review of the four Medieval Tigrayan cemeteries invites us to consider them in a broader regional context, in Ethiopia but also beyond, in the whole of the Horn of Africa and on the shores of the Red Sea, an area with which the epitaphs of Bilet attest important contacts. This contribution offers preliminary reflections on the materiality of the Tigrayan cemeteries through its lapidary (selection of supports, work, engraving and implementation of inscribed stelae) and architectural aspects (location of the funerary spaces, forms and organisation of grave markers, integration of the stelae within the markers).

La découverte (ou redécouverte) puis la fouille du cimetière musulman médiéval de Bilet, dans le Tigray en 2018, a permis d’étudier pour la première fois sur les hauts plateaux septentrionaux d’Éthiopie une architecture et des rites funéraires islamiques antérieurs au viiie/xive siècle. Les données récoltées à Bilet, précieuses pour la connaissance de l’Islam éthiopien d’avant les grandes conquêtes du xe/xvie siècle, peuvent désormais être comparées localement au corpus inédit des cimetières contemporains identifiés dans les environs d’Arra, qui ont livré un important matériel épigraphique mais n’ont pas fait l’objet de fouilles. Ce premier état des lieux des cimetières tigréens invite à envisager les sites dans un contexte régional plus étendu, en Éthiopie, mais également au-delà, dans l’ensemble de la Corne de l’Afrique et sur les rives de la Mer Rouge, espaces avec lesquels les épitaphes de Bilet attestent d’importants contacts. Cette contribution entend proposer des réflexions préliminaires sur la matérialité des cimetières tigréens à travers ses aspects lapidaires (sélection des supports, travail, gravure et mise en œuvre des stèles inscrites) et architecturaux (implantation des espaces funéraires, formes et organisation des marqueurs de surface, intégration des stèles inscrites aux marqueurs).
