Les enquêtes ethnographiques menées en Europe pourraient exercer une influence bien plus forte sur le renouvellement de la théorie anthropologique. En rappelant les problèmes suscités par l’invention de l’« aire culturelle méditerranéenne », l’auteur discute les dangers taxinomiques qu’entraîne la création d’un « géo-corps » européen (d’après l’expression de l’historien thaïlandais Thongchai Winichakul). Il appelle donc les anthropologues à résister aux effets réducteurs des catégories bureaucratiques, afin de repenser la théorie et la démarche comparative dans le contexte d’une révision de ce que veut dire l’« Europe ».

Ethnographic research conducted in Europe could exercise a significantly increased influence on the renewal of anthropological theory. Recalling the problems involved in the invention of a “Mediterranean cultural area”, the author discusses the taxonomic dangers that the creation of a European “geo-body” (to use Thai historian Thongchai Winichakul’s expression) generates. He therefore calls on anthropologists to resist the reductive effect of bureaucratic categories with a view to rethinking theory and comparison in the context of revised ideas about the meaning of “Europe”.

ZusammenfassungDer Einfluss der in Europa durchgeführten ethnographischen Studien auf die Erneuerung der anthropologischen Theorie könnte wesentlich größer sein. Der Autor erinnert an die Probleme, die die Erfindung des „Mittelmeerkulturraumes“ mit sich gebracht hat und diskutiert darauf aufbauend die taxonomischen Gefahren, die die Schaffung eines europäischen „Geo-Corpus“ (Ausdruck des thailändischen Historikers Thongchai Winichakul) in sich birgt. Er appelliert an die Anthropologen, den Vereinfachungen dieser bürokratischen Kategorien zu widerstehen und die Bedeutung des Begriffs „Europa“ auf der Grundlage komparativer Theorien und Ansätze neu zu überdenken.
