Thinking the image with Koselleck in the age of mass media : The transformation of experiences between memory and trauma

In the space of a generation, the omnipresent image has become the main medium through which we relate to the world, shaping not only our modes of expression but also our experiences. This transformation, which has brought about a profound renewal of our practices, is accompanied by a no less significant change in our relationship to time - and its narrowing focus on current events - but also to memory, by making it possible, through images, to instantly disseminate singular experiences in the public sphere. Starting from the untransmissible nature of individual experiences, particularly traumatic ones, Koselleck offers us here the starting point for a reflection on these contemporary mutations, particularly the question of transmission, but also of access to a common memory, which leads us to rethink the very presuppositions of historical work.

Omniprésentes, les images sont devenues en l’espace d’une génération le principal media au prisme duquel nous nous rapportons au monde, façonnant nos modes d’expression, mais également nos expériences et nos vécus. Entraînant un profond renouvellement de nos pratiques, cette mutation s’accompagne d’un changement non moins considérable de notre rapport au temps – et son rétrécissement sur l’actualité – mais également à la mémoire, en donnant la possibilité, par images interposées, de diffuser instantanément des expériences singulières dans la sphère publique. Partant du caractère intransmissible des expériences individuelles, notamment traumatiques, Koselleck nous offre ici le point de départ à une réflexion sur ces mutations contemporaines, notamment la question de la transmission, mais également de l’accès à une mémoire commune, ce qui amène à repenser les présupposés mêmes du travail historique.
