The Kitâb a'lâm al-nubuwwa by the Ismâ'îlî missionary Ahmad b. Hamdân Abu Hâtim al-Râzî (d. around 322/933-34) takes the form of a critical dialogue between the author and his contemporary and adversary, the doctor and philosopher Muhammad b. Zakarîya Abu Bakr al-Râzî, known to the Latins as Rhazes. The text given here is the complete translation, with notes and introduction, of the third and fourth chapters of the first section of the work (ed. S. al-Sawy and Gh.-R. Aavani, Tehran, 1977, pp. 14-28). In it are set out and refuted the famous theories of Abu Bakr on time, space and the genesis of the World, through the text of which, like a thread, runs the problematic of the taqlîd and of the ijtihâd in the practice of philosophy.
