La question religieuse en Espagne au 20e siècle

L’histoire et l’historiographie de la question religieuse en Espagne à l’époque contemporaine ont évolué parallèlement pendant la seconde moitié du 20e siècle. Le fil directeur de ce bilan historiographique est l’étude de l’influence du contexte sur l’historiographie. Il met en évidence l’étroite relation entre la permanence ou le retour de la « question religieuse » à l’agenda politique sur le mode du combat pour la sécularisation ou la laïcité, et l’analyse historique de ses racines profondes. Après avoir préalablement rappelé les antécédents de la question religieuse avant 1931, l’article analyse certaines questions historiographiques dans le contexte de l’évolution historique de la relation entre Église et laïcité, depuis la confrontation et le conflit (années 1930), jusqu’à la réconciliation (années 1965-1980), puis la réapparition du conflit à partir des années 2000.

The history and the historiography of religion in contemporary Spain have followed parallel trajectories throughout the second half of the 20th Century. The guiding principle of this historiographical assessment is observing the impact of context upon historiography. It highlights the close relationship between the continued presence and reappearance of the “religious issue” on the political agenda, from the angle of the fight for secularisation or “laicité”, and the historical analysis of its deep roots. After presenting the background of the religious issue prior to 1931, this article analyses a number of historiographical elements in the context of the historical evolution of the relationship between the Church and secularism, moving from confrontation and conflict (in the 1930s,) to reconciliation (1965-1980), and ultimately the conflict’s re-emergence in the 2000s.
