Conformément à une pratique très répandue, partout en Europe, à cette époque, nombre des pièces du théâtre vicentin obéissent à une esthétique de l’amphibologie : sous le masque du discours d’évidence, se dissimule un discours crypté, dont on est fondé à croire qu’il est celui qui préside à l’élaboration de certains autos. La prise en compte de ce discours est essentielle et de nature à transformer radicalement l’approche de l’œuvre et du spectacle qu’elle sous-tend.

Many Vicentine plays are built on an aesthetic of equivocation following a practice which was widespread in Europe at the time. Under the mask of an obvious discourse lies a coded one which we have grounds to believe plaid the fundamental part in the construction of at least some of the autos. To fully take into account this “other” discourse is of prime importance and may radically alter the understanding both of the text of the play and the nature of the show.

De acordo com uma prática amplamente divulgada nessa época por toda a Europa, muitas peças do teatro vicentino obedecem a uma estética da anfibologia: sob a máscara da evidência, dissimula-se um discurso criptado que poderá inclusive presidir à elaboração de certos autos. Ter em consideração este discurso e a sua natureza poderá transformar radicalmente a forma como se aborda a obra vicentina e a dimensão do espectáculo que lhe subjaz.
