La Hochschule für Gestaltung, est inaugurée à Ulm, en Allemagne, le 2 octobre 1955 avec l’ouverture du bâtiment, conçu par son premier directeur le designer Max Bill. Walter Gropius prend la parole à cette occasion comme fondateur du Bauhaus et renoue avec un certain discours : celui de la nécessaire spiritualité à trouver dans une société machinique et électrique qu’il pouvait déjà avoir dans les années 1910 et 1920 lorsqu’il était membre du Werkbund et rédacteur-en-chef de son organe de presse. Ce faisant il met en tension ce qui va justement poser problème à l’École d’Ulm : la science et la technique face à la position de l’artiste des arts appliqués c’est-à-dire du designer ou plus exactement du « metteur en forme ». The Hochschule für Gestaltung was inaugurated in Ulm, Germany, on 2 October 1955 with the opening of the building designed by its first director, the designer Max Bill. Walter Gropius took the floor on this occasion as the founder of the Bauhaus and revived a certain discourse: that of the necessary spirituality to be found in a machine and electrical society that he had already had in the 1910s and 1920s when he was a member of the Werkbund and editor-in-chief of its press organ. In so doing, he brought into tension what was to pose a problem for the École d'Ulm: science and technology in the face of the position of the applied artist, i.e. the designer or, more precisely, the “maker of form”.
