Intégration nationale et transformation de l’identité. Considérations sur le constructivisme

Cet article s’interroge sur les conditions d’intégration des immigrés dans les sociétés d’accueil du point de vue des injonctions de transformation de l’identité dont ils sont l’objet. Il ramène celles-ci à la conception de la construction de l’identité qui les sous-tend (« constructivisme faible ») et dont le noyau théorique repose sur les concepts de décision et de représentation censés commander les changements d’identité. Cette conception est l’objet d’une critique qui souligne, à l’inverse, l’importance des processus sociaux objectifs qui déterminent de telles transformations, ainsi soustraites au subjectivisme de l’action volontaire, souvent inséparable de verdicts concernant l’insuffisance de « l’effort » d’intégration des immigrés.

This article examines the conditions of integration of immigrants in host societies from the point of view of the injunctions to transform the identity of which they are the object. He brings them back to the conception of the construction of identity which underlies them (“weak constructivism”) and whose theoretical core rests on the concepts of decision and representation supposed to control the changes of identity. This conception is the subject of a critique which stresses, on the contrary, the importance of the objective social processes which determine such transformations, thus removed from the subjectivism of voluntary action, often inseparable from verdicts concerning the insufficiency of the “effort” of immigrants to integrate host societies.
