Sylvie Thouard, « Imagerie populaire, petits métiers et tournant industriel : La porteuse de pain », HAL-SHS : histoire de l'art, ID : 10670/1.yynk2f
The successful serial novel written by Xavier de Montépin La porteuse de pain explicitly crosses tradition and modernity. However, the play he then conceived with Jules Dornay bases its realism on the confirmation of an imaginary forged by iconographic conventions of small Parisian trades then widely disseminated. On the theater scene, the actors embody familiar images, while the novel (and later the movies and television series) call upon the new industrial imaginary rising in the late nineteenth century. Does « theater » express here a « resistance » to industrial modernity?
