As a result of canon formation, esthetical conflicts often arise between the artist and the public. Why did the composer Paul Hindemith (1895-1963) condemn the first version of his opera Cardillac (1926) when he wrote the libretto for the second version 1952, even though the opera of 1926 was a great success and in a way a canonical work ? The particular situation of Hindemith in the first half of the twentieth century and his conception of the role of an artist may explain his position. Nevertheless, the first version is prefered today, against the will of the author.
