Though Doderer is generally considered a genuine Austrian author, whose novels of the 1950’s recount the political reconciliation in the Second Republic, some aspects of his biography as well as later essays about Austrian identity put into question this seemingly natural connection between his literary works and his sense of belonging to the Austrian nation. This identity issue is in reality more complex, since it involves three countries, Russia, Germany and Austria, that are associated with shifting qualities and images.
