Early medieval ceramics in French coastal Flanders: technical and typological analysis

The development of rescue archaeology since the end of the nineties in France has lead to hundreds of archaeological surveys and excavations in Coastal Flanders, which represents at least 700 hectares. A considerable number of early medieval sites has been discovered this way. For the past two years, a synthetic work has been undertaken, particularly on ceramics. The study has focused on the most interesting ceramic assemblages. Binocular observations allow us to establish technical groups and recognize importations like Pingsdorf or possibly Badord, Paffrath and Verhaeghe A productions. Seriations confronted to radiocarbon dating (on bones or charcoals) helped us distinguish three phases that were previously associated, situated between the end of 8th and the beginning of the 11th century. A new look on typology completes this work and will allow future comparisons and a new interpretation of this territory.
