This study focuses on the vulnerability and adaptation strategies of the summer skiing industry in Switzerland, particularly in the context of cryospheric decline. The introduction highlights the importance of the cryosphere for summer skiing, noting the economic and sporting importance of this activity in Switzerland, particularly in the canton of Valais. However, the degradation of the cryosphere poses serious challenges, as evidenced by the closure of most summer ski resorts and the vulnerability of the remaining resorts, Saas-Fee and Zermatt. The research aims to identify and analyse these vulnerabilities and the industry's adaptation strategies, and to determine whether these are reactive or transformative.Methodologically, the study adopts a qualitative approach, using semi-structured interviews with local tourism stakeholders and customers. This approach is chosen to capture directly the perceptions and adaptations of those directly involved in the industry. The study uses discourse analysis to identify patterns in how vulnerability and adaptation are discussed, contextualised by existing literature on the development and challenges of summer skiing.Preliminary findings suggest that economic challenges are a common concern among stakeholders, with the viability of skiing heavily dependent on the presence of sports teams. The role of summer skiing varies between destinations, being less critical in Zermatt but essential in Saas-Fee, especially during off-peak periods. Interviews with sports teams reveal concerns about climate change and changing natural aesthetics, with adaptations including seeking training opportunities abroad and shifting to more off-snow training.
