This study describes some quantitative and syntactic features of the maternal language spoken to babies in a natural situation of daily routines (dressing and diapering). The mother's speech during the first year of life is composed of short sentences, one words and vocal utterances (vocalizations, interjections, exclamations), this special register of language seems related to some genetic characteristics of the child : his progress in his communicative competence and in his motor development. Some features (pitch, repetitions, exaggerated intonation) take place in a background of mimetic and gestual expression. Before the linguistic learning, we suggest that the maternal language reflects both the difficulty to speak with a nonverbal partner and the research of the interaction with the baby.
