Roger Perron, « Les effets de la réussite et de l'échec sur l'effort de contrôle », L'Année psychologique (documents), ID : 10.3406/psy.1959.6641
Summary The present work is part of a series of research work bearing on the effort of control exercised by the subject over his own activity. The aim here was to show that this effort depends on the expected outcome of the activity ; it increases with the probability of failure such as this latter appears to the subject himself. The notion of effort of control is here defined as the effort for quality in executing the task. The very simple task employed furnishes a sensitive index of the speed-precision attitude. It was carried out by 46 psychology students in a situation with very littlt personal involvement. According to their results, the students were divided into 3 groups with the same rate of success as regards the speed and quality of the work. Then, in a second collective examination, an effort was made to create an appreciably higher personal involvement in the task and the subjects were persuaded by an artifice that their performances at the first sitting had been : excellent, (subjects in the first group), medium (subjects in the second group), or very bad (subjects in the third group). Once the situation was created, the task was carried out again. It can be noticed, in conformance with the hypothesis, that the three groups are significantly different, statistically speaking, as regards the speed and quality of the work. The « failure » group works more slowly and better than the « neuter » group, which fact is interpreted as an increase in the effort of control. The attitude of the « success » group evolves in an opposite direction, but the difference with the « neuter » group is less marked. These results are discussed and the possibility of generalizing them is considered for a general study of the attitude assumed by a subject faced with a task, together with the factors in the assuming of an attitude.
