The excavations, which were resumed at Claros in 1988 have allowed to trace the beginning of Apollo's sanctuary back to the protogeometric period. They have brought to light the successive altars of the divinities from the high archaic period onward. The round altar, that was built for Apollo in the second half of the VIIth Century B.C., is linked to a long tradition of rounded sacrificial structures, which are particularly common in the protogeometric and geometric periods. The cult practice, as shown in the ex-voto, seems to be an individual devotion from local worshippers until the beginning of the hellenistic period.
