Through the study of the head office of a great french bank of Ancien Régime, the author questions the material forms of the "social flow" in the upper middle class. It should allow him too put into the concrete demonstrations of distinctive practices - by the rehabilitation of buildings or the constantly changing practices of furnishing -, in the wider prospect of the stakes in the conservation of the capital, the assertion of social position or the rivalry between the actors of family capitalism. The construction of a social trajectory over more than a century sketches, with caution, the slow constitution of the bourgeois identity of Le Couteulx, with the variety of its material constituents and brings to light in the field of social utility, the difficult conversion of the ennoblement into notability beyond the Revolution.

Au travers de l'étude du siège d'une grande banque française d'Ancien Régime, l'auteur interroge les formes matérielles de la « fluidité sociale » dans la haute bourgeoisie : il s'agit de replacer les manifestations concrètes des pratiques distinctives - la réhabilitation des bâtiments ou les mutations des pratiques d'ameublement -, dans la perspective plus large des enjeux de la préservation du capital, de l'affirmation de la position sociale ou de la rivalité entre les acteurs d'un capitalisme familial. La construction d'une trajectoire sociale sur plus d'un siècle ébauche, avec prudence, la lente constitution d'une identité bourgeoise, celle des Le Couteulx, dans la variété de ses composantes matérielles et met en lumière dans le champ de l'utilité sociale, la difficile conversion de l'anoblissement en notabilité par delà la Révolution.
