The undecimprimi, known in about ten african localities, are here submitted to a new examination after recent learned studies which were dedicated to them. The author presents the entirety of the inscriptions which mention them, accompanying them with a compendious commentary, and undertakes to propose a definition of the nature of this office. Between the reign of Antoninus and that of Caracalla, the undecimprimi, according to various circumstances, are assimilated to the flamines or to the flamines perpetui, or else are quite distinct from any flamines, but, in such a case, they have the responsibility of a priesthood which is not without some relation with the imperial cult and which they carry on before theflaminate. It is an office particular to peregrine cities, except in Thignica where it seems to exist in the time of the municipium. The prehistory (which is indeed punie rather than libyan) of this institution is entirely unknown to us. The author can only suppose that the undecimprimi, who were originally in charge of the worship of certain divinities in punie localities, have associated, as romanisation was progressing, emperor's salute with the worship of such gods or goddesses as they were under an obligation to honour.

Les undecimprimi, connus dans une dizaine de localités africaines, font ici l'objet d'un réexamen à la suite de travaux récents qui leur ont été consacrés. On présente l'ensemble des inscriptions qui les mentionnent en les accompagnant d'un bref commentaire et l'on tente de définir la nature de cette fonction. Entre le règne d'Antonin et celui de Caracalla, les undecimprimi sont, selon les cas, assimilés aux flamines ou aux flamines perpetui, ou distincts des flamines, mais, dans ce cas, ils sont chargés d'un sacerdoce qui n'est pas sans relation avec le culte impérial et qu'ils exercent avant le flaminat. C'est une fonction particulière aux cités peregrines, sauf à Thignica où elle paraît exister à l'époque du municipe. La préhistoire (punique plutôt que libyque) de cette institution nous échappe entièrement. On peut seulement supposer que les undecimprimi, â l'origine chargés du culte de certaines divinités dans des localités puniques, ont, avec les progrès de la romanisation, associé le salut de l'empereur au culte des dieux ou des déesses qu'ils avaient la charge d'honorer.
