17 世 紀 初 頭 の ビ ル マ (ミ ャ ン マ ー ) に お け る Nyaungyan 伝 統 画 法 の 出 現 は 、 ビ ル マ の 壁 画 史 上 、 一 つ の 画 期 を な す 出 来 事 で あ る 。 そ の 様 式 の 基 礎 の 一 つ と し て 、 物 語 が 連 続 し て 描 写 さ れ た 壁 画 の 下 に 説 明 文 の キ ャ プ シ ョ ン が 叙 述 さ れ て い る こ と が 挙 げ ら れ る 。 そ の 方 法 が 見 ら れ た 最 初 の 有 名 な 例 は 、Lokahteikpan 寺 院 の 12 世 紀 の 壁 画 に 遡 る が 、 そ の 後 、 そ れ が 様 式 と し て は 確 立 し な か っ た 。 本 稿 で は 様 々 な Nyaungyan 様 式 を 新 た な 分 類 方 法 を 基 に 、 こ の 白 紙 の 時 期 を 分 析 す る こ と を 試 み る も の で あ る 。 Nyaungyan 叙 述 的 伝 統 画 法 は 11~ 13 世 紀 の 仏 教 壁 画 の 最 初 期 に 遡 る も の で は な く 、 14~ 16 世 紀 に 遡 る 。 17 世 紀 か ら 19 世 紀 半 ば の Nyaungyan 様 式 と Konbaung 様 式 に 見 ら れ る 図 象 は 16 世 紀 後 半 よ り 「 前 Nyaungyan 様 式 」 (proto-Nyaungyan 様 式 ) か ら 確 立 さ れ た も の で あ る 。 近 代 的 な 叙 述 的 画 法 は Nyaungyan 伝 統 画 法 か ら 生 み 出 さ れ た も の で あ り 、 本 稿 で は そ の 成 立 の 過 程 を 溯 源 的 に 検 討 す る も の で あ る 。

The emergence of the Nyaungyan tradition in the early 17th century is a key moment in the history of Burma’s mural painting, one of whose foundations is the continuous narration in captioned registers. Although the first known example goes back to the 12th-century paintings of the Lokahteikpan, it had not gained widespread acceptance. Based on a new classification of Nyaungyan styles, this article attempts to resolve the hiatus. It appears that the Nyaungyan narrative tradition does not go back to the earliest Buddhist murals of the 11th–13th centuries, but to those of the 14th–16th centuries. The iconography, which was to prevail in the Nyaungyan and Konbaung styles from the 17th to the middle of the 19th century, was fixed from the second half of the 16th century in the proto-Nyaungyan style. The modern narrative format was born with the Nyaungyan tradition and this article attempts to trace it back to its formation.

L’apparition de la tradition Nyaungyan au début du XVIIe siècle constitue un moment clé de l’histoire de la peinture murale en Birmanie. Un de ses fondements est la narration continue en registres légendés. Si le premier exemple connu de ce format remonte aux peintures du XIIe siècle du Lokahteikpan, celles-ci n’ont pas fait école. En se basant sur une nouvelle classification des styles Nyaungyan, cet article tente de résoudre un tel hiatus. Il apparaît que la tradition narrative Nyaungyan ne remonte pas à la première peinture murale bouddhique des XIe-XIIIe siècles, mais à celle du XIVe au XVIe siècle. L’iconographie qui prévaudra pour les styles Nyaungyan et Konbaung, du XVIIe au milieu du XIXe siècle, se fixe à partir de la seconde moitié du XVIe siècle avec le style proto-Nyaungyan. Le format narratif moderne est né avec la tradition Nyaungyan et c’est à sa formation que cet article tente de remonter.
