Die Medien auf dem Tian'anmen-Platz : Akteure oder Voyeure Das Problem der Undurchdringlichkeit Chinas fur westliche Medien besteht schon seit langem. Beispielsweise waren der « Große Schritt nach vorn » (1958) oder die « Kulturrevolution » (1966) in Wirklichkeit wahre Tragödien. Damais war China den westlichen Medien natürlich verschlossen. Im Fall der Studentenbewegung des Tian'anmen-Platzes (1989) sah die Lage anders aus, weil die Gesamtheit der internationalen Presse sich an Ort und Stelle befand. Dennoch war seitens der Journalisten bei dieser Gelegenheit in der Wahrnehmung der Ereignisse eine gleiche Blindheit zu verzeichnen, die sich nicht allein durch einen mangelnden Abstand erklären läßt. Die Mediatisierung der Ereignisse hat im übrigen in starkem Maße dahin gewirkt, daß mit Notwendigkeit ein tragischer Ausgang unvermeidlich war.

Reporters in Tian'anmen Square : Actors or Voyeurs? The opacity of China to the western media goes back a long way. We now know, for example, that the « Great Leap Forward » (1958) or the « Cultural Revolution » (1966) were tragedies. It is true that China was then closed to the western media. In the case of the student movement of Tian'anmen Square (1989), the situation was different since the whole of the western press was present. It can be seen, however, that in the reporting of events there was the same blindness on the part of the journalists, which was not only due to their lack of distance. Indeed, the « mediatization » of the confrontation strongly inflected the course of events, in a direction that could only lead to a tragic outcome.

On sait aujourd'hui, par exemple, que le « Grand Bond en avant » (1958) ou la « Révolution culturelle » (1966) furent des tragédies. Il est vrai que la Chine était alors fermée aux médias occidentaux. Dans le cas du mouvement étudiant de la place Tian'anmen (1989), la situation était différente puisque l'ensemble de la presse internationale était sur place. On observe pourtant, dans l'appréhension des événements, une même cécité de la part des journalistes qui ne tient pas seulement à leur absence de recul. Par ailleurs, la médiatisation des événements a fortement infléchi le cours des choses dans une direction qui ne pouvait conduire qu'à un tragique dénouement.
