The invention of the metric scale of intelligence : a contribution to the sociology of scientific practices The aim of this article is to show that the invention of the metric scale of intelligence (MSI) was the product of a process of transformations affecting French society, out of which a number of conditions would emerge so that the issue of measuring intelligence could be raised and resolved by an "uncommon" experimental psychologist, Alfred Binet, in those terms in which he raised and resolved the question. Certain of these conditions concern the social demand addressed to the field of psychology as it was being constructed, independently of Binet, the individual ; others had to do with the emergence of the subfield of "experimental psychology" in which Binet had an investment (and in which he participated) ; others stemmed from the specific properties Binet had acquired in the course of his life (i.e. earlier experiments that he incorporated as patterns of perception, thought and action) ; and finally still others were the product of the interplay of social forces in relation to which the construction of the MSI takes on meaning ; these conditions imply the constitution of a network through which Binet would transform social demand into a question for experimental psychology. By reconstructing the articulation of these different conditions, one can hope to give a sociological account of the production of this "innovation".
