After considering monotheism as a necessary step for the laying the ground for modern rationalism, the intolerance and even violence it could generate. More than the heuristic category of monotheism, the historian of religions should analyze monolatry and, even more so, Yahwism, which is the religion and ideology linked to a specific deity. Since this deity established a covenant with a particular people, according to the textual sources, the cultural foundations of this type of relationship to a deity should be examined per se and questioned. Thus, the main purpose of this article is to encourage scholars to resolutely opt for an anthropological approach in order to take full account of the patriarchal ideology contained in Yahwism.

Après avoir considéré le monothéisme comme une étape nécessaire préparant à la rationalisation moderne, il est désormais mis en cause pour l’intolérance et même la violence qu’il génèrerait. Pour l’historien des religions, plus que le monothéisme en tant que catégorie heuristique, c’est la monolâtrie qu’il importe d’analyser et, plus encore, le yahwisme, c’est-à-dire la représentation religieuse et idéologique liée à une divinité spécifique. Cette divinité établissant d’après les textes une alliance avec un peuple en particulier, les fondements culturels de ce type de relation à une divinité sont à isoler et à interroger. Ainsi, cet article a surtout pour finalité d’encourager les spécialistes à s’engager dans une approche résolument anthropologique afin de prendre pleinement en compte l’idéologie patriarcale contenue dans le yahwisme.
