Résumé Fr

Surprisingly, the iconography of the famous Banteay Srei temple has never been studied thoroughly, even though this iconography is one of the few which has been entirely completed and so well conserved. This article constitutes the first part of such a comprehensive study, and its purpose is to show how the "perfection", always attributed to Banteay Srei, applies especially to the relation between its iconography and architecture. Of interest is studying how this relation, particularly the distribution of iconographic themes, informs our appreciation of this "perfection", while is entirely devoted to the symbolism of the monument : if the temple is considered beautiful, it is especially so because of this rich symbolic significance.
