Anthropology and the Buddhological Imagination: Reconstructing the Invisible Life of Texts

This paper aims to explore how anthropology may most effectively contribute to the art of buddhological imagination. It especially emphasizes that the commonly envisaged contribution of anthropology to Buddhist studies requires, in order to be fully productive, an absolute reversal of approach to the study of Buddhism. At the same time, it also notes a rift dividing scholars working on Buddhism, irrespective of disciplinary constituencies and reference materials employed, as a result of their representation of Buddhism.

Cet article tente de redéfinir comment l'anthropologie peut apporter une meilleure contribution à l'art de la bouddhologie. Il insiste plus particulièrement sur la nécessité d'un renversement complet de perspective en ce qui concerne la place qui est traditionnellement accordée à l'anthropologie dans l'approche de l'étude du Bouddhisme. Il met par ailleurs en évidence un clivage séparant les chercheurs travaillant sur le bouddhisme, clivage qu'il convient d'attribuer à l'image même qu'ils se font du bouddhisme plutôt qu'à leurs différentes disciplines ou aux sources sur lesquelles ils travaillent.
