"Huynh Phû Sô founded Hòa Hào Buddhism on the eighteenth day of the fifth lunar month of the Ky Mâo year in Hòa Hào, his home village, nowadays called Phú My, Phú Tân district, An Giang province." Such are the preliminary words we can read in the last compilation of the Dure Huynh Giáo Chù's writings, published in 2001 after the creation of the first representative committee of Hòa Hào Buddhism and its formal recognition by the authorities of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam in May 1999. Many well-known testimonies have endorsed this date (July 4, 1939 according to the solar calendar) and offer some interpretations of the founding Act which is — and will certainly remain — a subject of endless debates. This paper considers the birth and development of Hòa Hào Buddhism from a neglected but nevertheless very instructive angle : the discovery of this new religious movement by the French colonial authorities. When and how did the colonial power find out about the existence of Huynh Phú Sô and his teachings ? How did it consider this young man and his first activities and exhortations ? After an overview of the history and the nature of the interaction between the colonial power and popular beliefs in the Mekong Delta, this paper presents and analyzes the first reports sent by provincial officials to their central administration. Understanding these documents provides us with a better understanding of the mysterious genesis of Hòa Hào Buddhism.

"Huynh Phû Sô a fondé le bouddhisme Hôa Hào le dix-huitième jour du cinquième mois lunaire de l'année Ky Mâo dans son village natal de Hòa Hào, actuel village de Phú My, district de Phú Tân, province d'An Giang." Ainsi débute l' avant-propos de la dernière compilation des écrits du Duc Huynh Giáo Chû publiée en 2001 après la formation du premier comité représentatif du Phât Giáo Hòa Hào et sa reconnaissance officielle par les autorités de la république socialiste du Vietnam en mai 1999. Une série de témoignages connus depuis de nombreuses décennies confirme cette date - correspondant dans le calendrier solaire au 4 juillet 1939 - comme jour de fondation du culte (ngáy khai Ðạo). Ces mêmes témoignages ont fourni diverses interprétations sur l'acte fondateur qui est - et restera très certainement - l'objet de nombreux et intarissables débats. Nous abordons l'étude de l'émergence du bouddhisme Hòa Hào sous un angle qui n'a fait jusqu'à présent l'objet d'aucune attention et qui est pourtant particulièrement éclairant : celui de la découverte de ce nouveau mouvement religieux par les autorités coloniales françaises. Quand et comment ces dernières ont-elles eu connaissance de l'existence de Huynh Phú Sô et de son enseignement religieux ? De quelle manière les ont-elles considérés ? C 'est en rappelant l'histoire et la nature des rapports préexistants entre autorités coloniales et croyances populaires dans le delta du Mékong, puis à la lecture des toutes premières correspondances entre les services provinciaux et l'administration coloniale centrale que nous apportons des réponses tangibles permettant de mieux connaître la mystérieuse genèse de ce bouddhisme Hòa Hào.
