Au cours du XXe siècle, les rapports de Fribourg avec l'environnement montagnard ont changé de nature, d'intensité et de sens. La ville a fortement poussé en direction de la plaine rhénane. Des vieilles industries, fondamentalement xylophages, il ne subsiste que quelques rares entreprises. Pourtant l'environnement montagnard reste indirectement un facteur important de son essor engagé à partir de la fin du XIXe siècle. Le respect de son cadre naturel, cher au milieu bourgeois dès le XIXe siècle, s'est combiné à l'heure actuelle à une forte conscience écologique qui est particulièrement ancrée dans le milieu des nouveaux résidents, aboutissant à une politique urbaine orientée sur les modes de transport en commun, la promotion d'énergies renouvelables et la construction de quartiers 'durables '.
