This contribution presents the autobiography of the councellor of the court of cassation Louis Crahay (1834-1904). A significant part of the relation is devoted to his father, Jacques-Guillaume Crahay, one of the first teachers of the Université de Louvain. L. Crahay immerses the reader in the high Belgian catholic society of the XIXth century from which it portraies the daily life unrestrainedly, the text being intended to a strictly familial circle. It offers thus an exceptional testimony of the private life of the elites. The framework of the social relationships picture itself, highlighting the importance, at that age, of the recommendations regarding the entrance and promotion in Magistracy.

Cette contribution présente l'autobiographie du conseiller de cassation Louis Crahay (°1834-1904). Une part non négligeable de la relation est consacrée à son père, Jacques-Guillaume Crahay, un des premiers professeurs de l'Université de Louvain. L. Crahay plonge le lecteur dans la haute société catholique belge du XIXe siècle dont il dépeint la vie quotidienne sans retenue, le texte étant destiné à un cadre strictement familial. Il offre ainsi un témoignage exceptionnel de la vie privée des élites. La trame des rapports sociaux se dessine, mettant en lumière l'importance, à cette époque, des recommandations pour l'entrée et l'avancement dans la magistrature.

Deze bijdrage presenteert de autobiografie van de raadsheer bij het Hof van Cassatie Louis Crahay (°1834-1904). Een belangrijk onderdeel van het relaas is gewijd aan zijn vader, Jacques-Guillaume Crahay, één van de eerste professoren van de Universiteit van Leuven. L. Crahay stort de lezer in de Belgische katholieke samenleving van de XIXde eeuw, waarvan hij het dagelijks leven zonder enige terughoudendheid schetst. De tekst was namelijk bestemd voor zijn naaste familie. Het biedt een uitzonderlijke blik op het privéleven van de maatschappelijke elite van die tijd. Het weefsel van sociale relaties komt naar voren en benadrukt het belang van aanbevelingen bij de toegang tot de magistratuur en de latere carrière.
