Besides the publication of a new correspondence between Navar-rian mercers frequenting the fairs of Castile and big international merchants living in the Netherlands, the authors study in the introduction to these letters many aspects of the personal and commercial links between this province and the kingdom of Castile. First, they are interested in the merchants established in Antwerp (emigrated from Bearn, Castile and the Basque country), in their interrelations, in their links with their homeland of origin as well as in their strategy of upward social mobility in their new country. The small mercers, without comparable size, turn to their protection, to their financing and to their mediation to amplify their field activity, and imbricate by this way big trade with retail trade, what entails disappointments and conflicts. The economic aspects of these exchanges are also approached : goods, routes, fairs system, credit and foreign exchange. Moreover, published letters allow a fine analysis of circumstances and of political decisions impact on the commercial and private life of the actors, quite as on their mental universe, and give a very alive picture of all of these elements.

Outre la publication d'une correspondance inédite entre des merciers navarrais fréquentant les foires de Castille et de grands marchands internationaux résidant aux Pays-Bas, les auteurs étudient dans l'introduction à ces lettres de nombreux aspects des liens personnels et commerciaux qui unissent cette province et le royaume de Castille. Ils s'intéressent en premier lieu aux hommes d'affaires établis à Anvers (émigrés béarnais, castillans et basques), à leurs interrelations, aux liens maintenus avec leur patrie d'origine ainsi qu'à leur stratégie d'ascension sociale en terre d'accueil. Les petits merciers, sans envergure comparable, recourent à leur protection, à leur financement et à leur médiation pour amplifier le champ de leur activité, et imbriquent de cette façon grand négoce et commerce de détail. Déconvenues et conflits s'ensuivent. Sont également abordés les aspects proprement économiques de ces échanges : marchandises, trajets, système des foires, crédit et changes, les missives publiées permettant une analyse fine de la conjoncture et des répercussions des décisions politiques sur la vie commerciale et même sur la vie privée des acteurs, tout comme sur leur univers mental, dont la correspondance donne un aperçu très vivant.

Dankzij de publicatie van een onuitgegeven correspondentie tussen een aantal kleine handelaars uit Navarra die geregeld op de markten van Castilië aanwezig waren en grote handelaars die resideerden in de Nederlanden gedurende de regeerperiode van Karei V, zijn de auteurs erin geslaagd om diverse aspecten te bestuderen van de hoofdzakelijk commerciele relaties tussen deze provincie en en het Koninkrijk van Castilië. Zij waren in de eerste plaats geïnteresseerd in de naar de Nederlanden geëmigreerde Castiliaanse en Baskische handelaars en hun relaties met mekaar, met hun vaderland en met het milieu waarin ze leefden. Ook ging hun aandacht naar de oprichting van commerciële en politieke netwerken ter plaatse en in hun regio van herkomst.
