In the autumn of 1916 the Belgian soldier Gabriel Vercken makes contact with Joseph de Dorlodot, head of the “Service of correspondence and documentation” based in Folkestone. A native of Verviers, he relates of having closely witnessed the events that took place in his hometown and its region during the first days of the war and proposes to establish an account. The publication of this unpublished manuscript addresses three principal concerns. Firstly, Gabriel Vercken’s text, while unfinished, provides very accu¬ rate indications with regard to the events that he came to report during the first days of the war and makes an a posteriori, but undeniable contribution to testimonies that have already been published. It not only confirms a number of elements known among specialists, but also contains new information on the psychosis of the “free shooters” and the wrongdoings committed by the 14th German infantry brigade in the region of Verviers (Verviers, Battice, Fécher, Herve, Micheroux, Soiron et Soumagne). Secondly, it is important to point out that the archives of the “Service of correspondence and documentation” contain a huge number of other manus¬ cripts on the events that occurred in Belgian municipalities during the first days of the war, whose volume and importance compare to Gabriel Vercken’s text. Finally, one should highlight the precise nature and the extreme diversity of activities deployed by Joseph de Dorlodot’s “Service of correspondence and documentation”, the various ramifications of which have not yet been covered at present.

Durant l’automne 1916, le soldat belge Gabriel Vercken prend contact avec Joseph de Dorlodot, chef du «Service de correspondance et de documentation» basé à Folkestone. Originaire de Verviers, il dit avoir suivi de très près les événements des premiers jours de la guerre à Verviers et dans la région et se propose d’en faire la relation. La publication de cette source manuscrite inédite répond à trois préoccupations majeures. Tout d’abord, le texte de Gabriel Vercken, bien qu’inachevé, livre des indications très précises sur les événements qu’il a été amené à couvrir durant les premiers jours de guerre et constitue un apport indéniable, bien qu’a posteriori, aux témoignages déjà publiés. S’il confirme toute une série d’éléments connus des spécialistes, il apporte aussi de nombreuses informations neuves en matière de psychose des francs-tireurs et de méfaits commis par la 14e brigade d’infanterie allemande dans la région de Verviers (Verviers, Battice, Fécher, Herve, Micheroux, Soiron et Soumagne). Ensuite, il importe de signaler l’existence et d’attirer l’attention sur les très nombreux manuscrits concernant les événements survenus dans les communes belges durant les premiers mois de l’invasion, d’ampleur et d’intérêt comparables à celui de Gabriel Vercken, qui se trouvent dans les archives du Service de correspondance et de documentation. Enfin, il convient de mettre en lumière la nature exacte et l’extrême diversité des activités du Service de correspondance et de documentation créé par Joseph de Dorlodot, service aux nombreuses ramifications dont personne n’a fait la synthèse jusqu’à présent.

In de herfst van 1916 neemt Belgisch soldaat Gabriel Vercken contact op met Joseph de Dorlodot, hoofd van de “Dienst van de Briefwisseling en Documentatie” in Folkestone. Hij meldt hoe hij als inwoner van Verviers van zeer nabij de gebeurtenissen tijdens de eerste oorlogsdagen in de stad en haar omgeving meemaakte en neemt zich voor om er een relaas van te doen. De publicatie van deze onuitgegeven en handgeschreven bron beantwoordt aan drie hoofddoelen. Eerst en vooral levert de -weliswaar onafgewerkte -tekst van Gabriel Vercken een zeer nauwkeurige berichtgeving over de gebeurtenissen tijdens de eerste oorlogsdagen en vormt hij achteraf gezien een onmiskenbare bijdrage tot reeds gepubliceerde getuigenissen. Het verslag bevestigt niet alleen diverse feiten die al gekend zijn onder specialisten, maar bevat ook nieuwe gegevens over de psychose van de vrijschutters en de wandaden begaan door de 14de Duitse infanteriebrigade in de regio van Verviers (Verviers, Battice, Fécher, Herve, Micheroux, Soiron en Soumagne). Daarnaast is het belangrijk om de aandacht te vestigen op de talloze andere handschriften over de gebeurtenissen in de Belgische gemeenten tijdens de eerste maanden van de inval, die zich ook in het Archief van “Dienst van de briefwisseling en documentatie” bevinden en waarvan de omvang en waarde vergelijkbaar zijn met de tekst van Gabriel Vercken. Tenslotte moeten de precieze aard en de enorme waaier van activiteiten ontplooid door de “Dienst van de Briefwisseling en Documentatie” nog worden belicht : Joseph de Dorlodot was de oprichter van een wijdvertakt orgaan dat tôt op heden door niemand in kaart is gebracht.
