An archaeological excavation of the site of Falconnière, at Billezois, has drawn attention to a book of tenures bearing a date contemporary with the occupation phase identified by the excavation, i. e. the fourteenth century. The paper booklet was allegedly written by a Jean Falcon, notary royal, in his home at Falconnière ; but an examination of both internal and external features proves it to be a seventeenthcentury forgery. The watermarks belong to a paper mill active in the first part of that century. Various anachronisms, including a hand imitative of fifteenth-or sixteenthcentury rather than earlier scripts, show the forger to have been hardly competent and possibly pressed for time. Nevertheless, the document was used successfully on at least two occasions : it deceived first the local seigneurial court of Billezois in a suit filed in 1682 (possibly the occasion for the forgery), then Jean-Baptiste de La Poix de Fréminville, notary royal and grandson of the famous feudist Edme de La Poix de Fréminville, when the book of tenures of the parish church was renovated in 1762.
