The synthetic validity has been proposed within the professionnal selection’s framework instead of the classical model. It consists in validating the individual caracteristics not toward a global critérium of success within a given profession, but rather toward the work’s components appearing within all the professions. This study presents the fit of this concept to the professional guidance’s situation. A sample of 673 boys and 755 girls of 15-16 years old were tested when being in their last year of mandatory school. Six years later, they were re-tested and their professional activities have been described on 5 dimensions : scholastic intelligence, technical intelligence, routine, social, artistic. Fifty descriptive factors belonging to the environmental structures and to the cognitive, affective and evaluative spheres of the individuals have been related to the five professional dimensions, for each sex and scholastic levels (primary and secondary school), as well as the whole boys and girls subsamples, using stepwise regression technics. The obtained results showed that, except for the evaluative structure (professional interests) where some constants were found, all relations were conditionned with respect to the scholastic level and sex. The profession’s characteristics are better predicted in the secondary school level subsample than in the primary’s one, and for the boys subsample than for the girls, indicating for the latter a lesser freedom of choice. The potential applications of the synthetic validity’s concept have been sketched (window technic).
