Résumé En Fr

Paleopathological diagnosis of treponematoses: about a well preserved case. Summary. — Our study deals with a female skeleton in good state of preservation found in grave Nr 330 of the medieval cemetery of Nyárlónnc. The grave can be dated to the 17th century. Macroscopic morphological and paleo-radiological studies (X-ray and computed-tomographical analyses) have been carried out. The individual has widespread, bilateral and symmetrical florid periostitis, especially of the humeri, tibiae and femora. Similar lesions can be detected on the forearm bones, clavicles, scapulae, fibulae and calcanei. Penosteal new bone formation is associated with osteolytic areas and cortical deformities in several locations. Osteolytical changes of the sphenoid are to be mentioned. Traces of clustered pits can be recognized on the frontal and right zygomatic, which recall the first stage of contiguous gummatous osteo-penostitis. Macroscopical, radiological and CT investigations of the cranial and postcranial alterations support the diagnosis of treponemal disease. Differential diagnosis and geographical situation suggest that the individual may have been suffering from acquired syphilis. The aim of this work is to attract attention to the possibility of identification of syphilitic lesions in uncommon locations and to the usefulness of paleo- radiological investigations during the diagnosis of treponemal diseases in ancient bones. Publishing of complete cases in good state of preservation can further paleopathological studies.
