Das große Portal von Cluny III, von Neil Stratford Das 1810 zerstörte Portal von Cluny ist uns bekannt durch einige (sehr bruchstückhafte) graphische Dokumente, eine ausführliche Beschreibung und eine Anzahl von Fragmenten, die bei Grabungsarbeiten gefunden wurden. Die derzeit in Paris und Cluny in der Vorbereitung befindliche Ausstellung wird jüngste Forschungsergebnisse über das Portal präsentieren. Dieser Artikel bietet Beobachtungen allgemeinerer Art zur Geschichte von Cluny III und seinem Portal, zu dessen Ikonographie und Stil sowie zu seiner Stellung in der Geschichte der romanischen Skulptur in Burgund. Im Anhang findet man einen Text über den Doktor Dumolin, einen Historiker von Cluny des 18. Jhds. und einen Text über die disjecta membra des Portals, die in Privatsammlungen und Museen Frankreichs und der Vereinigten Staaten verstreut sind.

The great portal of Cluny III, by Neil Stratford The destruction of the Cluny portal in 1810 left us with visual documents (very partial), a precise description and many fragments, often excavated. An exhibition in Paris and Cluny is in course of preparation, which will present the latest researches on the portal. Here some observations of a more general kind are offered : on the history of Cluny III and its portal, on the iconography of the lost portal and on its style and place in the history of Romanesque sculpture in Burgundy. Two appendices follow : on the 18th-century Cluny historian, Dr Benoît Dumolin ; on the disjecta membra of the portal, scattered in private collections and in various museums in France and the United States.

Le portail de Cluny, détruit en 1810, nous est connu par quelques documents graphiques (très partiels), par une description détaillée et par un certain nombre de fragments, découverts à l’occasion de fouilles. L’exposition qui est en cours de préparation à Paris et à Cluny présentera les dernières recherches sur le portail. Cet article offre des observations d’ordre plus général sur l’histoire de Cluny III et de son portail, sur iconographie de celui-ci, sur son style et sa place dans l’histoire de la sculpture romane en Bourgogne. On trouvera à la suite deux appendices : sur le docteur Dumolin, historien de Cluny au XVIIIe siècle ; sur les disjecta membra du portail, dispersés dans des collections particulières et dans différents musées, en France et aux États-Unis
