Les fragments de sculpture architecturale issus des fouilles du cloître de l’ancienne abbaye de Saint-Gilles-du-Gard

Die Bauplastikfragmente aus den Grabungen im Kreuzgang der ehemaligen Abtei von Saint-Gilles-du-Gard. Bei den Ausgrabungen im Kreuzgang der ehemaligen Abtei von Saint-Gilles-du-Gard wurden Fragmente von Bauplastik und Inschriften gefunden, die bei den Abbrucharbeiten im späten 18. Jahrhundert in einer Raubgrube zurückgelassen worden waren. Die geringfügigen Dimensionen der Bruchstücke lassen auf eine absichtliche Zerkleinerung schließen, die im Verband mit einer dicken Brandschicht im gleichen stratigraphischen Zusammenhang auf eine Kalkherstellung am Ort selbst hindeuten könnte. Die Mehrzahl der Funde ist dem Baudekor der Kreuzgangarkaden, insbesondere dem der Nordgalerie zuzuordnen, bei der sie deponiert worden waren. Der Stil dieser Skulpturfragmente bestätigt den relativchronologischen Befund, nach dem diese Galerie gleichzeitig mit der Fassade zum Zeitpunkt der Fertigstellung der Unterkirche neu errichtet wurde, wobei die architektonische Form im Einzelnen unklar bleibt. Doppelsäulen mit runden und polygonalen Schäften und Basen wechselten in einem nicht mehr rekonstruierbaren Rhythmus mit kubischen Pfeilern oder Vierfachsäulen. Gänzlich ungewiss bleibt die Zuordnung der seltenen Bruchstücke von Figuren, deren Stil eng mit dem der Westfassade sowie dem des Portals und des Kreuzgangs von Saint-Trophime in Arles verbunden ist.

The fragments of architectural sculpture found during the excavation of the cloister of the former abbey of Saint-Gilles-du-Gard. The excavation of the cloister of the former abbey of Saint-Gilles yielded several fragments of sculptures and inscriptions abandoned as trench rubble filling during the late-eighteenth-century demolition. The small size of the pieces suggests that the stones were broken up intentionally, probably for use as quick lime, as a thick layer of ash found in the same stratigraphic context seems to attest. The fragments, found in the vicinity of the north gallery, come from architectural elements that probably formed the arcades of that gallery in the cloister. The style of the sculpture indicates that that gallery was rebuilt while work on the crypt was coming to an end. It is difficult, however, to reconstruct the emplacement of the fragments. The double colonnettes, cylindrical or polygonal, must have alternated either with rectangular pillars or with four clustered colonnettes, following a rhythm and disposition that remain hypothetical. Even more enigmatic is the original emplacement of the rare figural fragments, stylistically similar to the sculpture of the façade, but also to the portal and cloister of Saint-Trophime at Arles.

Les fouilles du cloître de l’ancienne abbaye de Saint-Gilles ont livré un lot de fragments de sculptures et d’inscriptions abandonné par les démolisseurs de la fin du XVIIIe siècle dans le comblement d’une tranchée de récupération. La petite taille des pièces suggère un concassage intentionnel, probablement en vue de leur transformation en chaux vive – ce dont pourrait témoigner l’épaisse couche de cendres retrouvée dans le même contexte stratigraphique. L’ensemble se compose surtout d’éléments architecturaux provenant sans doute des arcades du cloître, notamment de la galerie nord au voisinage de laquelle ils se trouvaient. Le style des fragments sculptés confirme la chronologie relative selon laquelle cette galerie fut reconstruite alors que s’achevaient les travaux de la crypte. En revanche, il est difficile de restituer les dispositions architecturales de celle-ci. Des colonnettes géminées, cylindriques ou polygonales, devaient alterner soit avec des piliers rectangulaires, soit avec quatre colonnettes jointives, suivant un rythme et une disposition qui restent hypothétiques. Plus énigmatique est l’emplacement d’origine des rares fragments de sculpture figurée, dont le style peut également être rapproché de celui de la façade, mais aussi du portail et du cloître de Saint-Trophime d’Arles.
