Résumé En

To what extent did George Buchanan’s tragedy published in 1577 and its eponymous character contribute to the political and religious enlightenment of a protestant king ? John the Baptist does not call the political power into question, but those in power consider him as a serious threat since Buchanan insists on the inevitable separation between the spiritual sphere and the political authorities that persecute a new religion. The conflicts between the protagonist, preaching the return to the values of faith and the Israelite clergy, still very much attached to the Mosaic regulations, are to be seen as a metaphorical valorization of the reformed conception of faith . The confrontation of incompatible "ideologies" bears on the aesthetics of the tragedy. The description of John the Baptist’s character, the construction and unfolding of the plot closely depend on the moral bearing of Baptist.
