The Rehabilitation of an Urban Space in Southeast Asia : The Chinatown of Bangkok, Thailand. The historical nucleus of Bangkok, the Chinatown quarter, must now face the vicissitudes of a center city the growth of which has remained disorderly for much too long. Its inadequate network of streets has reached an alarming degree of congestion ; its pollution rate, its intolerable noise, and its shortage of parking space are at the very origin of the deterioration of its living quarters and noxious environment. Unofficial responses to the degradation of the site are aimed at saving the inherited urban structure with the implementation of rehabilitation projects.

Le quartier chinois, noyau historique de Bangkok, doit aujourd'hui affronter les vicissitudes d'un centre ville au développement resté trop longtemps anarchique. Son réseau de voies de communication inadéquat a atteint un degré de congestion inquiétant, son taux de pollution, son agressivité auditive et l'exiguïté de ses zones de stationnement sont à la source de la détérioration de l'habitat et d'un cadre de vie pernicieux. Des réponses privées à la dégradation du site envisagent, sous la forme de projets de réhabilitation, de sauvegarder le découpage des aires fonctionnelles héritées.
